It says unofficial right there!
Doesn’t that mean beta?!
Or does that just mean it has nothing to do with the government?

unofficial is just that – unofficial!
the things is that the stions marked on the metro lines are purely speculative.
My map of the entire suburban network however is available here on wikipedia

I had some trouble understanding it actually. It would help if you included the arterial roads in a lighter colours.

thanks mate. twas done using illustrator.
/marc
thanks. the map is modelled after the london tube map
I thought it would be pretty self explanatory, but anyway here goes:
The white lines are the suburban emu routes
The yellow one is the MRTS/ elevated routes which some people here refer to as the flying train
The red and blue line are the proposed metro lines
Those white circles are transfer stations between two lines/ routes
There are NO roads on this map, all are rail lines. I am working on a rail+bus route map for chennai seperately. more about that later tho.

Can anyone tell whether MRTS Puzhuthivakkam Railway Station is getting shifted to Adambakkam adj. to drainage pumphouse/burial ground. originally it was planned at a junction where about 12 roads are meeting – it is now said that an alternative proposal has been made to shift to Adambakkam

The reason I wanted roads is to get an idea of the various localities. I don’t know where every place is with relation to the other. Also, an arrow that indicates North would be a good addition.

How are you going to make this more mashable?
Suppose someone put a GPS device in some of the trains and want to project the real time data over the map how do they go about doing it?
Do you have a list of stations and their map X, Y coordinates in pixel as JSON or XML?
Make it available, people will find new ways of using it.

its just a schematic a not a scale map so thats really not important.
then you should have a look at this google map mashup
and up is north

Hey thanks. and nice of you to stumble by

This is meant purely as a static map, most useful in print.
Making a json database is not all that difficult, but im not sure of the potential uses of it. Do you have anything specific in mind?

Actually the proposed Metro alignment as well as the proposed rail network is outdated in the sense, we have not shifted to proactive gears. We wait till everything crumbles, then try and do something. Majority of the Metropolitan area of Chennai does not have proper rail links. The so called planning guys, still dont plan emerging suburbs correctly. Our foresight or vision is always till THE NEXT ELECTION ONLY

Somehow, i dont share your pessimism. True, almost all major infrastructural projects for the city have got badly delayed like the OMR MRTS and the various flyovers, but there has been more progress over the past 6 months than there has ever been in the past.
Its all very easy to blame the govt for everything isnt it. In the end it is the public who are the cause for most delays due to land acquisition and rightly so. If you were 70 and living on a pension, and suddenly they want to tear your house down for building a highway through it, you wouldnt fight?
We arent China, i guess we got to live with it.

Nice looking map and blog, Can you tell me the elevated and underground part of the route.
If its elevated, will there is destruction and land acquisition for the elevated train.?
Any idea with respect to DMRC?

The map is awesome !
I had read on chennai metblogs about mapping chennai bus routes (http://chennai.metblogs.com/2008/03/16/mapping-bus-routes-in-chennai/).
I think they could use your suggestions and creativity.

ah, the bus map thing is really a huge task. To do it would require the cooperation of the MTC, which isnt easy to come by

I think because of this project many of the house may be destroyed.
So govt should give good houses within the city.

I completely don’t understand why there are no East-West connections. This is ridiculous. Unless such connections are built, the city traffic will continue to be a nightmare, Lines 1, 2, MRTS, suburban notwithstanding.
Two lines are needed: one running Vadapalani-Mambalam-Teynampet-Mandaiveli and the other running Anna Nagar-Nungambakkam-1000 lights-Beach. I would argue that these should be built before Line 2, maybe even before Line 1.

@sri
well it is unfortunate that they are planning to solve only the immideate problem and not looking at a long term solution, but for such an expensive project it gets difficult to justify construction of the east west corridors based on current traffic movement which is way less than whats carried on mount rd or 100 feet rd

Hi all,
I also like to suggest that there must be a seperate line in IT corridor since most of the people are working there.
i recently visited london. There the Tube trains are very well developed and it has more than 300 station in north london itself. Everyone has cars and nobody goes by car to office and everyone take train since the roads are very narrow. i hope once chennai is connected by train we too follow the same

See the link of london tube map. It is very easy for anyone to go from one place to other easily. Even if you want to take 3 or 4 trains it is easy. Most of the stations has connectiviy to another line. When i first went to london, In the first day itself i travelled for 1 hour and it was easy for me to find connecting trains and travel. You can find train in every 2 to 5 minutes. In some cases u can find train in a minute and it is very well displayed in stations about the next 3 trains to come, in how many minutes, destination etc.
